Microwave Calibration Targets

A microwave Cal-Val site of 200m x 80m area has been set up with deployment of Corner reflectors at IMGEOS, National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC). Ample care has been taken to maintain Calibration site in vegetation free condition with low background level which is an important factor for absolute radiometric calibration.

Corner reflectors are passive standard radar targets which provide one of the best solutions for field–use during the SAR calibration campaign. The corner reflectors are designed with strict fabrication tolerances and characterized for its Radar Cross Section at different frequency bands and polarizations. Conventional Square Trihedral and Dihedral corner reflectors along with Polarization Selective Dihedrals of different dimensions are deployed in the Cal-Val site. Each reflector is fitted on to a graduated azimuth-elevation mount enabling orientation of corner reflectors with respect to bore sight of SAR antenna for each satellite pass. For precise orientation of corner reflector towards SAR sensor magnetic compass, Digital Bevel box, Angle Finder and inclinometers are used.
