Bhuvan Data Hub – LISS-IV: Monitor India's Landscape Through Time

The LISS-IV module of the Bhuvan Data Hub provides access to satellite imagery acquired by the LISS-IV sensor onboard Indian Earth Observation satellites. With a spatial resolution of 5 m, the service provides detailed views of India's landscape through time-composited satellite image mosaics.

Half-yearly India mosaics are available for January–June and July–December for the years 2021 to 2025, enabling users to observe seasonal and temporal variations across the country. In addition, annual composite mosaics are available for 2017 and 2019, providing an extended archive of LISS-IV observations.

The time-series imagery provides valuable information for monitoring changes in agriculture, vegetation, water bodies, urban areas, infrastructure, and other land features. The half-yearly composites facilitate assessment of seasonal variations as well as changes occurring over relatively short time intervals.

A key feature of the module is its interactive temporal comparison capability. Users can select two or more image datasets and compare them using either Swipe Mode or Step Mode. Swipe Mode allows users to move an interactive divider across the map to compare corresponding areas in different time periods, while Step Mode enables sequential viewing of the selected images. These tools provide an intuitive way to identify and interpret changes in the landscape.

For example, comparison of January–June 2021 and January–June 2025 LISS-IV imagery over the Omkareshwar Reservoir clearly illustrates the emergence of floating solar panels on the reservoir. Such comparisons demonstrate how multi-temporal satellite imagery can help visualise and understand significant changes in infrastructure and land and water resources over time.

The LISS-IV module is useful for government agencies, planners, researchers, academia, and geospatial professionals for Earth Observation-based monitoring, change detection, resource assessment, and decision support.
