Bhuvan Thematic Services – Mapping India's Land, Water and Natural Resources

The Bhuvan Thematic Services module provides seamless access to a comprehensive collection of thematic geospatial datasets generated by the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) using Indian Earth Observation satellite data. The platform enables users to visualise, analyse, and explore nationally consistent thematic information that supports planning, resource management, policy formulation, and scientific research.

Among the flagship datasets is the Land Use/Land Cover (LULC) database, available at multiple mapping scales to meet diverse user requirements. The platform offers LULC maps at 1:50,000 scale for 2005–06, 2011–12, and 2015–16, LULC maps at 1:250,000 scale covering annual cycles from 2005–06 onwards, and high-resolution LULC maps at 1:10,000 scale under SIS-DP Phase I and Phase II. These datasets enable users to monitor changes in agriculture, forests, water bodies, settlements, and other land cover classes over time.

In addition to LULC, the module provides access to several other nationally important thematic layers, including Land Degradation (1:50,000 scale), Urban Land Use (AMRUT, 1:4,000 scale), Wasteland Mapping, Geomorphology, and Lineament datasets. Interactive map visualisation, layer selection, and analytical tools make it easy to examine thematic information at national, state, district, and local levels.

The Bhuvan Thematic Services module serves as an authoritative source of geospatial information for government agencies, planners, researchers, academia, and industry, supporting evidence-based decision-making and sustainable management of India's natural resources. The thematic datasets are available for visualisation, as OGC-compliant web services, and for download, enabling seamless integration with GIS applications and decision-support systems.
